During the turbulent years of the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced a distinctive version of the small cent. This 1862 issue is composed of a copper-nickel alloy, which gives these early Indian Head cents a thicker, lighter-colored appearance than the pure copper cents that would follow later in the decade. The obverse features a depiction of Liberty wearing a traditional Native American feather headdress, surrounded by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the 1862 date at the bottom. This design, created by James B. Longacre, was meant to symbolize freedom and national identity during a period of intense domestic conflict. On the reverse, a simple yet elegant wreath encircles the denomination, which is clearly struck as "ONE CENT". This particular specimen has survived the generations in extraordinary condition, certified as Mint State 65 (MS-65), showcasing the original design details and metal luster just as it looked when it left the mint over a century and a half ago.
