1862 Indian Head Cent VF
During a pivotal moment in American history, the Philadelphia Mint produced this 1862 Indian Head Cent. Struck in a specific alloy composed of 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, this issue carries a different metallic composition and weight than the bronze cents that would follow later in the decade. The obverse features a depiction of Liberty adorned with a Native American feather headdress, a creative decision by designer James B. Longacre. Surrounding this central figure are the bold letters spelling out UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the year 1862 positioned clearly at the bottom. On the reverse side, the simple and direct denomination of ONE CENT is framed elegantly inside a wreath. This particular coin survives in Very Fine condition, allowing observers to appreciate the fine details of the design and the historic inscriptions that remain remarkably legible after more than a century and a half.
