During the turbulent years of the American Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint produced this intriguing copper alloy penny. Known to collectors as the Indian Head Cent, this specific issue from 1863 represents a fascinating period in United States coinage. Unlike later bronze versions, this coin was struck from a sturdier mixture containing 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, giving it a distinctively thick feel. The obverse features a depiction of Liberty wearing an Native American feather headdress, surrounded by the bold inscription of the nation's name and the 1863 date.
