1863 Indian Head Cent MS-62 NGC

During the third year of the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced a distinct version of the Indian Head cent. Unlike the bronze cents that would follow later in the decade, this 1863 issue was struck from a robust copper-nickel alloy. This specific composition gives the coin a thicker, paler appearance than traditional copper pennies, a characteristic that makes these wartime issues particularly fascinating to study. The obverse of the coin features a stylized depiction of Liberty wearing an Native American feather headdress, with the year 1863 positioned below the portrait. The word LIBERTY is visible on the band of the headdress, while the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircle the design. This imagery, conceived by designer James B. Longacre, offers a unique window into nineteenth-century American design sensibilities. On the reverse, the simple denomination of ONE CENT is framed by a lush wreath. This particular specimen has survived the generations in remarkable condition, graded Mint State 62 (MS-62). Finding a coin from this turbulent era of American history that escaped the wear of daily commerce allows us to appreciate the original details and texture of the copper-nickel metal just as it looked when it left the mint.
