1864 Indian Head Cent AU (L on Ribbon)

The year 1864 marked a significant transition for the small United States one cent piece. This particular variety, struck in Philadelphia, features a composition of 95 percent copper, with the remaining 5 percent made of tin and zinc. It is highly regarded by enthusiasts for a tiny, subtle detail hidden within the design: the letter L, representing the designer James B. Longacre, placed discreetly on the ribbon of the headdress. On the obverse, the coin displays a representation of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American feather headdress, with the date 1864 positioned below the portrait. The word AMERICA is legible along the right edge, hinting at the full original inscription. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed reverse design. The denomination ONE CENT is boldly struck at the center, framed by a lush wreath. A small shield sits at the very top of the wreath, while a bundle of arrows secured by a ribbon bow rests at the bottom, completing a classic nineteenth-century motif. This specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of Longacre's intricate engraving.
