The year 1864 marked a significant evolution for the United States one-cent piece. During this period, the mint shifted the metallic composition of the Indian Head Cent to a durable bronze alloy, consisting of 95 percent copper combined with a 5 percent blend of tin and zinc. This change resulted in a thinner, lighter coin compared to its copper-nickel predecessors, establishing a standard that would endure for decades. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse of this coin features a profile of Liberty adorned with a Native American feathered headdress. The word LIBERTY is delicately inscribed upon the band of the headdress, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1864 at the bottom. This representation remains one of the most recognizable icons in American numismatic history. The reverse design presents a simple yet elegant layout, centering the denomination ONE CENT inside a lush wreath. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing moderate wear but retaining clear details of the intricate design elements and inscriptions that define this classic mid-nineteenth-century issue.
