The year 1864 marked a significant period of change for American coinage, and this Indian Head Cent represents a fascinating moment in that evolution. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this specific coin features a metal composition of 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel. This distinct alloy gives the coin a heavier, thicker feel compared to the bronze versions that would soon follow later that same year. The obverse displays a stylized depiction of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American feather headdress, with the date 1864 positioned clearly at the bottom. Encircling this central image is the bold inscription of the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. On the reverse, the coin features the simple and direct denomination ONE CENT, nestled securely within a decorative wreath. This example survives in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while still preserving the essential elements of James B. Longacre's classic nineteenth-century design.
