The year 1864 marked the introduction of a novel denomination in American coinage, the Two Cent Piece. Struck in copper at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin represents a fascinating moment in United States currency history. This particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of its mid nineteenth century craftsmanship. The obverse of the coin features a prominent shield layered over a pair of crossed arrows, all framed by a decorative wreath. Arcing above this central design is the historic inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST," marking the very first time this now-familiar motto appeared on a circulating United States coin. Below the shield, the date 1864 is clearly visible. On the reverse, a simple yet elegant wreath of wheat or laurel branches encircles the bold denomination, which is spelled out as "2 CENTS." Around the outer rim, the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" are proudly displayed.
