1864 Two Cent Piece Large Motto VF

0.0000 troy oz 1864 Very Fine

The year 1864 marked the introduction of a fascinating denomination in American coinage: the Two Cent Piece. This particular copper coin represents the Large Motto variety, struck during the inaugural year of the series at the Philadelphia Mint. On the obverse, a detailed shield is set against a backdrop of crossed arrows and a lush wreath. Arcing above this design is a scroll bearing the words "IN GOD WE TRUST," marking the historic first time this famous motto appeared on any United States coin. The date 1864 is clearly positioned at the bottom. The reverse design is elegant in its simplicity, featuring a full wreath that encircles the bold denomination of "2 CENTS." Around the outer rim, the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" are proudly displayed. This specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing pleasing detail on both the shield and the surrounding foliage.
