The year 1865 marked a monumental period of transition, and during this time, the Philadelphia Mint produced a striking gold coin of immense size and value: the twenty-dollar Double Eagle. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this substantial piece contains nearly a full troy ounce of precious metal (0.9675 troy ounces), representing the pinnacle of circulating coinage of its day. The Philadelphia Mint produced 351,175 of these pieces, which bear no mint mark. The obverse features a classic representation of Lady Liberty, her hair secured in a bun with curls cascading down her neck.
