This impressive twenty dollar gold piece represents a remarkable survivor from the final year of the American Civil War. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1865, this coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold. Over the decades, vast quantities of these large denomination gold issues were melted down, making surviving specimens like this one, certified in About Uncirculated 55 condition, highly compelling to study. The obverse features a classic profile of Liberty looking to the left. She wears a coronet inscribed with her name, while thirteen stars encircle the border to represent the original colonies. On the reverse, designer James B. Longacre placed a detailed heraldic eagle with a protective shield over its chest. A halo of thirteen stars floats above the eagle, surrounded by the legend naming the United States of America and the face value of twenty dollars.
