In 1865, the San Francisco Mint struck more than one million double eagles, each carrying a face value of twenty dollars. These impressive gold coins were minted during a pivotal era in American history, composed of 90 percent gold and containing nearly a full troy ounce of the precious metal. The San Francisco origin is marked by the letter S on the reverse side of the coin. On the obverse, the classic portrait of Liberty is depicted, wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below her portrait, the date 1865 is clearly visible. This specific specimen has survived the decades in an extraordinary state of preservation, earning a certified grade of Mint State 63 (MS-63), which indicates a high level of original luster and minimal surface marks for a coin of this age.
