Introduced during a period of significant national transition, the 1865 United States two-cent coin represents a fascinating chapter in American numismatics. Minted in Philadelphia, this piece is struck in copper and remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving its original design details with a beautiful brown coloration. The obverse of the coin showcases a central shield draped with a wreath, set against a backdrop of two crossed arrows. Arching above this patriotic emblem is the early appearance of the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST", while the year 1865 is clearly inscribed at the bottom. This design was created by James Longacre, whose work defined many of the nation's mid nineteenth century coins.
