In the years following the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced a distinctive denomination that has since vanished from active circulation: the three-cent piece. Struck in Philadelphia during 1866, this coin represents a fascinating chapter in the nation's monetary experimentation, serving as a durable alternative to paper fractional currency. Backed by the United States government, this sovereign issue is composed of a copper-nickel alloy, giving it a bright, silvery appearance despite containing no precious metal. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Lady Liberty facing left, her hair secured by a classic coronet. The word LIBERTY is inscribed upon her headpiece, framed by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1866 at the bottom. This elegant profile was created by the prominent engraver James Longacre, who shaped much of the mid-nineteenth-century aesthetic for American coinage. On the reverse, the coin displays its denomination using bold Roman numerals. The numeral III is positioned at the center, encircled by a stylized laurel wreath. This simple yet striking combination of classical imagery and clear value made the coin easily recognizable in daily commerce, and surviving examples in Extra Fine condition offer a remarkably clear look at these intricate details.
