1866 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle MS-61 PCGS (Motto)

In 1866, the Philadelphia Mint produced a tiny run of just 6,700 gold five dollar coins. This particular year represents a major transition for the United States Half Eagle series, as it marks the introduction of the religious motto above the eagle on the reverse. Strikingly preserved, this specimen survived the decades in Mint State condition and has been officially certified as MS-61. The obverse features the classic left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair secured with a coronet, surrounded by thirteen stars with the date 1866 positioned below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows. Above the eagle, the newly added scroll bears the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE D. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. Because it was struck at the main mint facility in Philadelphia, it bears no mintmark. Finding a survivor from such a limited mid-nineteenth-century mintage in uncirculated condition offers a rare glimpse into the artistry of American coinage during a period of national rebuilding.
