In the years following the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced a distinctive three-cent denomination made from a copper-nickel alloy. This 1867 issue, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era of American currency when fractional denominations were essential for daily commerce. The obverse of this coin presents a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Her hair is styled neatly, secured by a coronet that displays her name. Surrounding this central figure is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the year of production, 1867, positioned directly beneath the bust. The design was created by James Longacre, who served as the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. On the reverse, the coin features a minimalist yet elegant layout. The denomination is represented by the Roman numeral III, which is nestled inside a stylized laurel wreath.
