0.9675 troy oz .900 1867 NGC

In 1867, the San Francisco Mint struck 920,750 of these impressive twenty-dollar gold pieces. As part of the historic Liberty Double Eagle series, each coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, minted with a purity of 0.900. This substantial weight and size made the double eagle a cornerstone of high-value transactions in the nineteenth century, especially in the American West where gold coinage was highly favored over paper currency. The obverse of this gold piece showcases the classic portrait of Liberty, her hair styled in a soft wave and secured with a coronet. The word LIBERTY is clearly inscribed on her band, with the year 1867 positioned directly beneath the portrait. This particular specimen has been certified in About Uncirculated 50 condition, preserving the bold details of its mid-nineteenth-century design and the distinctive 'S' mint mark that denotes its West Coast origin.
