1868 3 Cent Nickel BU

0.0000 troy oz 1868 Brilliant Unc

During the late 1860s, the United States Mint produced a distinctive three-cent denomination struck in a copper-nickel alloy. The 1868 issue stands as a prime example of this short-lived series, showcasing a design that reflects the traditional artistic styles of nineteenth-century American coinage. This particular specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of its original strike just as it appeared when leaving the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair secured by a coronet. Encircling her likeness is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the date 1868 positioned directly below the bust. On the reverse, the coin features a minimalist yet elegant approach to displaying its face value. The denomination is represented by the Roman numeral III, which is nestled within a protective laurel wreath. This simple combination of classical imagery and clear numbering makes the three-cent nickel a fascinating study in early American decimal currency.
