The Carson City Mint holds a legendary status in American numismatics, established in Nevada to turn the silver of the Comstock Lode into official coinage. Among its most famous nineteenth-century outputs are the Liberty Seated half dollars struck between 1870 and 1878. These fifty-cent pieces, minted from 90% silver, carried the commerce of a rapidly expanding frontier. Today, surviving specimens in culled condition bear the physical scars of their journey, showing heavy wear, scratches, cleaning, or other evidence of intensive circulation. The obverse of this historic coin showcases Lady Liberty seated upon a rock. In her hands, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests on a shield emblazoned with the word LIBERTY. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and three arrows in its talons. Positioned below the eagle is the highly sought-after "CC" mint mark, a tiny detail that connects these worn silver pieces directly to the wild era of the Nevada silver boom.
