In 1870, the Philadelphia Mint produced a curious denomination that occupies a unique place in American currency history: the three-cent nickel. This specific coin, preserved in Fine condition, offers a tangible look at the post-Civil War coinage of the United States. Composed of a copper-nickel alloy, it represents a fascinating period when the nation was transitioning its everyday circulating currency. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair secured by a coronet. Surrounding her likeness is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the year 1870 positioned clearly at the bottom.
