In 1870, the San Francisco mint produced a remarkably small run of the gold quarter eagle, striking a mere 16,000 pieces. This low-mintage issue represents a fascinating moment in Western minting history, carrying the distinctive 'S' mint mark on its reverse. Struck in 90 percent pure gold, this coin contains 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal and has survived in Very Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation. The design, created by Christian Gobrecht, features a left-facing portrait of Liberty on the obverse. Her hair is secured by a band inscribed with the word 'LIBERTY', and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1870 positioned below.
