In 1870, the San Francisco Mint struck nearly one million twenty-dollar gold coins, each bearing the distinctive 'S' mint mark. These large, impressive gold pieces served as a backbone of commerce in the American West, where hard currency was highly favored over paper notes. Today, surviving examples offer a tangible connection to the bustling economy of the late nineteenth century.
