In 1871, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 80,120 Liberty Head double eagles. Striking these large, heavy gold pieces required immense pressure, and surviving examples from this era that remain in uncirculated condition are highly regarded by historians and numismatists alike. This particular coin has been officially certified as Mint State 61 (MS-61), indicating it has escaped the heavy wear of circulation while preserving its original luster. Composed of 90 percent gold and containing nearly a full troy ounce of the precious metal (0.9675 troy ounces), the twenty-dollar denomination represents the pinnacle of nineteenth-century American circulating coinage. The design features the classic portrait of Liberty on the obverse, surrounded by stars, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle holding an ornate shield. The reverse also bears the national mottoes, including the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," alongside the twenty-dollar denomination.
