In the early 1870s, the Carson City Mint in Nevada was striking gold coins in relatively small quantities. Among these scarce issues is the 1871 Liberty Head half eagle, a five-dollar gold piece with a recorded mintage of only 20,770. Finding one of these western-minted coins today offers a direct connection to the frontier era of American coin production. This particular specimen is composed of 90 percent gold, containing approximately 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. It has survived the decades in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders at About Uncirculated 55 (AU-55), meaning it still retains much of its original luster and detail from the day it left the coin press. The design features the classic Liberty Head on the obverse side, surrounded by stars with the date 1871 positioned below the bust.
