1872 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-63 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1872 PCGS

In 1872, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 251,850 gold double eagles, each carrying a face value of twenty dollars. These impressive coins were struck in 90 percent pure gold, containing nearly a full troy ounce of the precious metal (0.9675 troy ounces). Because they were minted in Philadelphia, they bear no mintmark, representing the standard-bearer of American gold coinage from the era. This specific coin has survived the decades in remarkable condition, achieving a certified grade of Mint State 63 (MS-63). At this grade level, the coin retains much of its original luster and sharp detail, offering a vivid window into late nineteenth-century American minting artistry. The inscriptions on the coin reflect the foundational themes of the nation. The obverse features the date 1872 beneath the classical portrait of Liberty. The reverse displays the traditional national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, surrounded by the country's name, STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination, TWENTY D.
