During the post-Civil War era, the United States experimented with unique denominations to resolve coin shortages. Among these was the three-cent piece struck in a copper-nickel alloy. The 1872 issue, minted in Philadelphia, represents a fascinating moment in American monetary history when fractional paper currency was being phased out in favor of durable metal coins. The obverse of this coin presents a stylized portrait of Lady Liberty facing left, her hair bound by a coronet. Encircling her image is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the year 1872 positioned clearly at the bottom. This design reflects the classical artistic influences that dominated American coinage during the nineteenth century. On the reverse, the coin features its denomination represented by the Roman numeral III.
