In 1872, the San Francisco Mint struck 780,000 of these impressive twenty dollar gold pieces. Known as the Liberty Gold Double Eagle, each coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. This specific specimen has survived the decades to be graded AU-53 (About Uncirculated), preserving the fine details of its nineteenth-century design. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars and the 1872 date. On the reverse, the design showcases a heraldic eagle with a shield, accompanied by the traditional mottoes IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
