1873 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Open 3 MS-62+ PCGS

In 1873, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 1,709,800 gold double eagles, including a notable variety known to observers as the Open 3. This twenty dollar gold piece, struck with a purity of 0.900, contains 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. Because it was struck at the main Philadelphia facility, the coin carries no mint mark. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, achieving a certified grade of Mint State 62+ (MS-62+). The obverse features the classic Liberty head design, while the reverse displays the heraldic American eagle. It stands as a beautifully preserved example of United States coinage from the post-Civil War era.
