In 1873, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 1,709,800 gold double eagles, which bear no mint mark on their surfaces. Among these issues is a notable design variety known as the Open 3, distinguished by the spacing of the digits in the date on the obverse. This specific coin has survived the decades in remarkable condition, earning a certified grade of Mint State 63 (MS-63). Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, this substantial coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse displays a classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars and the 1873 date. The reverse features a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, flanked by the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The denomination is indicated at the bottom as TWENTY D.
