0.9675 troy oz .900 1874 Almost Unc

In 1874, the Philadelphia Mint struck a remarkable twenty-dollar gold piece containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. This specific coin survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, offering a fascinating window into late nineteenth-century American coinage. While 366,780 of these pieces were originally minted, countless examples were melted down in subsequent decades, making surviving specimens highly prized by historians and enthusiasts. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, designer James B. Longacre placed a detailed heraldic eagle bearing a shield on its chest, with thirteen stars clustered above. The outer rim carries the bold inscriptions declaring the nation of origin as the United States of America, along with the twenty-dollar denomination.
