In the decade following the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced a distinctive three-cent coin made from a copper-nickel alloy. This 1874 issue, preserved in Fine condition, offers a tangible look at a denomination that has long since vanished from American pocket change. Strikingly different from the silver three-cent pieces that preceded it, this base-metal coin represents a fascinating chapter in the nation's post-war monetary experimentation. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair secured by a coronet. Surrounding her likeness is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the year 1874 anchored at the bottom. This elegant depiction was created by James Longacre, whose artistic influence shaped many of the country's mid-nineteenth-century circulating coins. On the reverse, the coin displays its face value using the Roman numeral III. This central denomination is framed by a stylized laurel wreath, creating a clean and highly readable layout.
