1874 $3 Gold Princess MS-64 PCGS

0.1451 troy oz .900 1874 PCGS

In 1874, the Philadelphia Mint produced a relatively small run of just 41,800 three-dollar gold pieces. This unusual denomination, minted in 0.900 fine gold, stands out as one of the most distinctive denominations in United States coinage history. Strikingly preserved, this particular specimen has been certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64) condition, offering a remarkably clear window into the craftsmanship of the era. The obverse of the coin features a profile of an Indian Princess, her hair styled in tight curls that fall over her neck. She wears a feathered headdress, with the word LIBERTY clearly inscribed across the band. Surrounding this central portrait is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. On the reverse, a detailed wreath encircles the coin's denomination and the date of issue. The words 3 DOLLARS and the year 1874 are stacked in the center of the design. Because this coin was struck at the main Philadelphia Mint, it bears no mint mark, leaving the reverse clean and focused on the agricultural wreath and the bold denomination.
