In the decade following the American Civil War, the United States Mint continued production of one of its most unusual denominations: the three-dollar gold piece. Minted in 1874, this specific coin represents a fascinating chapter in American currency, hailing from a time when gold coins of diverse values circulated together. This issue was produced at the main Philadelphia Mint, which traditionally left its coins without a mintmark. Crafted from 90 percent gold, this piece contains 0.1451 troy ounces of precious metal. The design belongs to the celebrated Gold Princess series, which features an stylized portrait on the obverse. The year 1874 is clearly struck on the reverse of the coin, anchoring it to its precise moment in nineteenth-century history. Out of a relatively small original mintage of just 41,800 pieces, this specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders as Extra Fine 45.
