In 1874, the Carson City Mint in Nevada struck a limited run of 115,085 gold double eagles, each carrying a face value of twenty dollars. These heavy gold pieces represent a fascinating era of frontier minting, produced close to the silver and gold mines of the American West. Marked with the famous CC mint mark, this issue is a remarkable survivor from a period when large-denomination gold coins actively circulated in commerce. The obverse of the coin features the classic profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a soft wave and secured with a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her portrait, representing the original colonies, with the year 1874 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, the design showcases a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This specimen, composed of 90.1 percent gold and containing nearly a full troy ounce of precious metal, has been certified by professional graders in Mint State 61 condition.
