The 1874 Indian Head Cent represents a classic era in American copper coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this piece is composed of an alloy containing 95 percent copper, with the remaining five percent made of tin and zinc. Over time, these coins develop a distinct character that reflects their journey through circulation, with this particular example surviving in Fine condition. On the obverse, the coin displays a depiction of Liberty wearing a traditional Native American feather headdress. The year 1874 is anchored at the bottom, while the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" wrap around the central figure. James B. Longacre designed this iconic imagery, which became one of the most recognizable faces of small-denomination currency in the United States during the nineteenth century. The reverse of the coin features a clean and direct layout, centering on the denomination "ONE CENT" nested inside a decorative wreath. This simple yet elegant wreath design frames the face value, offering a balanced contrast to the detailed portrait on the opposite side.
