In 1875, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of 295,720 large gold coins, each containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. This specific design era spanned from 1866 to 1876, making this issue one of the final representatives of its type. Over the decades, vast quantities of these massive gold pieces were melted down, leaving only a fraction of the original mintage for modern enthusiasts to examine and appreciate. The obverse of this twenty-dollar coin displays a left-facing profile of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and thirteen stars encircle her portrait to represent the original colonies. The year 1875 is stamped boldly at the bottom. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield over its chest. Above the eagle, a cluster of thirteen stars forms a delicate halo. The rim is inscribed with the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the denomination. This particular specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, offering a remarkably clear window into the craftsmanship of late nineteenth-century American coinage.
