In 1875, the Carson City mint produced a limited run of 111,151 gold double eagles, each containing nearly a full troy ounce of gold. This massive twenty-dollar piece represents a fascinating era in American minting, struck in the American West from a composition of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper. The obverse features a classic profile of Lady Liberty, her hair secured with a coronet, encircled by thirteen stars that represent the original colonies. On the reverse, an eagle stretches its wings wide, bearing a shield across its chest. Above the eagle, a halo of rays and thirteen stars frames the national motto, while the legends identifying the United States of America and the twenty-dollar denomination wrap around the border. The coveted CC mintmark is positioned below the eagle, marking its origin at the Nevada branch mint.
