The year 1875 saw the production of a magnificent twenty dollar gold piece at the San Francisco branch of the United States Mint. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this double eagle contains 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a specific ten year design window spanning from 1866 to 1876, making it a compelling survivor of a bygone era of American coinage, especially since a vast number of these issues were melted down in subsequent decades.
