In 1876, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 583,860 gold double eagles, each carrying a face value of twenty dollars. These impressive pieces were struck in 90 percent pure gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. Because they were minted at the main facility in Philadelphia, these coins do not bear a mint mark. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, earning a certified grade of Mint State 61 (MS-61). The obverse features the classic Liberty head design, while the reverse displays the proud heraldic eagle.
