1876 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-62 PCGS

In 1876, the year of the United States centennial, the Philadelphia Mint produced this twenty-dollar gold piece. Known as the Liberty Double Eagle, this substantial coin contains nearly a full troy ounce of gold, specifically 0.9675 ounces of the precious metal, alloyed to a purity of 0.900. It stands as a classic representative of America's pre-1933 circulating gold coinage, an era when high-value gold coins actively backed the nation's commerce. The obverse features a classic profile of Liberty, her hair secured with a coronet inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle her portrait, with the centennial year of 1876 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, an eagle holds a scroll bearing national mottos, surrounded by the country's name and the denomination of twenty dollars. Because this specimen was struck at the main Philadelphia facility, it bears no mint mark on the reverse. This particular coin has survived the decades in remarkable condition, graded as Mint State 62.
