1876 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle XF

0.9675 troy oz .900 1876 Extra Fine

Struck in the centennial year of 1876, this twenty dollar gold coin represents the final year of a specific design subtype minted since 1866. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold within its overall 90 percent gold composition. While the original mintage reached 583,860 pieces, the actual number surviving today is far lower due to widespread melting of these issues over the decades. The design, created by James B. Longacre, presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty on the obverse. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle bearing a shield on its chest, with the motto "In God We Trust" nestled within a circle of thirteen stars above the bird. The surrounding inscriptions define its origin as the United States of America and state the denomination as twenty dollars.
