In 1876, the branch mint in San Francisco struck this impressive twenty-dollar gold piece. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of 90 percent pure gold, this coin represents a historic era of American metallic currency, part of a design series that spanned from 1850 to 1907. The obverse displays the profile of Lady Liberty, who is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1876 is clearly struck at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a majestic eagle spreads its wings, bearing a protective shield on its breast. Above the eagle, a halo of rays and thirteen stars illuminate the design.
