1876-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-61 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1876 PCGS

In 1876, the San Francisco Mint struck a significant run of twenty-dollar gold coins, totaling 1,597,000 pieces. This particular specimen survived the decades in remarkable condition, eventually earning a certified grade of Mint State 61 (MS-61). Struck from 90 percent pure gold, the coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal, representing a substantial and heavy piece of nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse displays the classic profile of Liberty, her hair secured with a band bearing her name, surrounded by thirteen stars with the date 1876 positioned below. On the reverse, the heraldic eagle is flanked by the words of the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY D. Just beneath the eagle, the subtle 'S' mint mark indicates its origin at the historic San Francisco facility.
