In 1876, the San Francisco Mint produced a substantial run of 1,597,000 gold double eagles, each carrying a face value of 20 dollars. Struck in 0.900 fine gold with a precious metal content of 0.9675 troy ounces, these heavy gold pieces played a vital role in American commerce during the late nineteenth century. Today, finding an example that has survived in Mint State 62 condition offers a rare glimpse into the original luster and sharp details of this classic coinage. The obverse of this Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair secured with a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1876 is boldly struck at the bottom. On the reverse, a majestic heraldic eagle is flanked by ornamental scrolls, with the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST positioned above the shield. The surrounding inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY D., with the S mint mark of the San Francisco facility clearly visible beneath the eagle.
