1876-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle XF

0.9675 troy oz .900 1876 Extra Fine

Struck during the legendary Wild West era, this 1876 double eagle represents a fascinating survivor from a time when gold coins actively circulated in American commerce. Minted in San Francisco, this twenty dollar piece is composed of 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. Over the decades, vast numbers of these historic issues were melted down, making surviving specimens in Extremely Fine condition highly compelling objects of study. The obverse showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, artist James B. Longacre placed a heraldic eagle bearing a protective shield on its chest, beneath a canopy of thirteen stars. The reverse also displays the country of origin, United States of America, and the twenty dollar denomination, capturing the artistic spirit of a design that spanned the years 1850 to 1907.
