In 1877, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 397,650 twenty-dollar gold coins, known to enthusiasts as the Liberty Double Eagle. These substantial pieces were struck in 90 percent pure gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. Because they were minted in Philadelphia, they carry no mint mark, representing the standard-bearer of American coinage of the era. The obverse features the classic depiction of Liberty, surrounded by stars with the date 1877 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, the coin displays an eagle design accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS, denoting its high face value.
