The 1877 Liberty Gold Double Eagle represents a fascinating era in American coinage. Struck at the famous Carson City Mint, this twenty dollar denomination contains 0.9675 ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. Only 42,565 of these pieces were originally minted, and because countless gold coins were melted down in subsequent decades, surviving examples are particularly compelling to study. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty on the obverse. She wears a hair band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, while thirteen stars encircle her image. The year 1877 is clearly visible at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle displays a shield across its chest. Thirteen stars form an arc above the eagle, accompanied by the country name, United States of America, and the twenty dollar denomination. This design motif was a staple of American gold coinage, minted continuously from 1850 to 1907.
