In 1877, the San Francisco Mint struck a limited run of gold quarter eagles, producing just 35,400 of these 2.50 dollar coins. Struck from 0.900 fine gold with a net gold content of 0.1209 troy ounces, this issue represents a fascinating moment in late nineteenth-century American branch-mint coinage. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty designed by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1877 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, Gobrecht's heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, its breast shielded. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the eagle, while the denomination is noted below. Just above the denomination, the S mint mark identifies this specimen as a product of the historic San Francisco facility.
