In 1877, the San Francisco Mint struck a remarkably small run of five-dollar gold pieces, producing a mere 26,700 of these Liberty Half Eagles. Because of this low mintage, surviving examples are highly prized by those who study the history of United States coinage. The "S" mintmark on the reverse stands as a testament to its West Coast origin during an era when gold coins were an active part of American commerce.
