Introduced in the late nineteenth century, the Morgan silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. These hefty silver pieces were struck from 1878 through 1904, with a brief revival in 1921. Each coin is composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, weighing 26.73 grams and measuring 38.1 mm in diameter. This specific coin has been certified at a Mint State 62 grade, preserving its original luster and details. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty, who wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a wreath of cotton and wheat. On the reverse, a bald eagle holds arrows and an olive branch. George T. Morgan designed both sides of this iconic dollar, which contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. Production of these coins spanned multiple locations, including Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Denver. Many of these silver dollars did not survive the early twentieth century. Under the Pittman Act of 1918, millions of these coins were melted down, making the surviving specimens, especially those preserved in Mint State condition, highly fascinating to study.
